Sam Cooke’s "Chain Gang" (1960) was inspired by seeing prison laborers working on a road gang during a car ride. Cooke’s version includes the sounds of men working to evoke the scene. It became his second-biggest hit (after “You Send Me”), reaching #2 on the Billboard chart. The song is remembered as Cooke’s empathetic tribute to the prisoners’ plight.
