"(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean" (1953) was an R&B hit for Ruth Brown. Songwriters Johnny Wallace and Herb Lance presented it to Brown at Atlantic Records, but she initially thought it was too slow. Brown insisted on a faster tempo, turning it into a fiery R&B rocker. The final recording topped the R&B chart (her third #1) and helped crossover her into the pop market, where it reached #23.
