Phil Phillips’s “Sea of Love” (1959) was his lone major hit. Co-written by Phillips, the song surged to #1 on the R&B chart and #2 on the pop chart. It’s a dreamy late-1950s crooner tune. Phillips wrote it as a tribute to his girlfriend, but famously earned only about $6,800 from its success (despite selling over a million copies). The song has been covered widely, including a notable version by The Honeydrippers in the 1980s.
