Money (That's What I Want)

Soul Blues

“Money (That’s What I Want)” (1959) was Motown co-founder Berry Gordy’s first hit as a songwriter. He played piano on Barrett Strong’s session. The recording session became legendary: Gordy and producer Billy Davis brought in two kids, Gordy’s sister Gwen and a friend, to sing along for extra energy. The song peaked at #2 R&B/#23 pop in 1960, and its catchy cry of “money, money, money” became an enduring rock’n’roll trope.
