'Crocodile Rock' (1972) was Elton John's first US #1 single. The song is a nostalgic throwback to 1950s rock 'n' roll, complete with doo-wop backing vocals and a peppy piano riff. Bernie Taupin’s lyrics celebrate dancing and youth ('I remember when rock was young'), and Elton’s energetic delivery (especially the 'la la la' chorus) gives it a fun, party vibe. It won a Grammy and remains one of Elton’s most recognizable tunes. Intriguingly, Bernie Taupin later admitted he wasn’t fond of the song, but it didn't stop it from becoming a joyful smash.
