M.I.A.

M.I.A. is a British-Sri Lankan artist Maya Arulpragasam who created a unique world music style combining Tamil folk, hip-hop and electronics. Her debut album Arular (2005) received critical acclaim for political lyrics about the Sri Lankan conflict. The hit Paper Planes (2007) sampled The Clash and became the soundtrack to Slumdog Millionaire, earning her an Oscar nomination. M.I.A. was the first to popularize dancehall and baile funk in the West. Her visual style and activism influenced artists like Diplo, Grimes and FKA twigs.
