McDonald used samples from What a Fool Believes by Doobie Brothers and Minute by Minute by Doobie Brothers. He has 5 Grammy Awards and sold over 20 million records worldwide. McDonald became the first artist to have 3 consecutive #1 hits on Billboard Hot 100 between 1978-1979. His influence is felt in the work of Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross and Hall & Oates.
