The Coasters’ “Yakety Yak” (1958) was a #1 R&B and #1 pop hit. A classic Leiber & Stoller teen-comedy song, it admonishes a misbehaving kid with the refrain "Yakety yak (don’t talk back)". The humorous lyrics (about chores and curfews) and Johnny Burns’s animated lead made it a rock & roll favorite, soon covered by The Beatles in their early BBC sessions.
