'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' (1968) is Iron Butterfly's signature psychedelic epic, clocking in at a sprawling 17 minutes on the album. Its title famously originated when singer Doug Ingle drunkenly slurred 'In the Garden of Eden.' The song features a heavy, hypnotic riff and one of rock's first major drum solos (by Ron Bushy), which together epitomize late-60s psychedelic jam sessions. A 3-minute single edit also became a surprise hit, helping the album sell over 3 million copies. 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' became a counterculture staple, and its riff is often cited as a classic of the era.
