“Twist and Shout” – Famously covered by The Beatles in 1963 – was actually written by Phil Medley and Bert Russell. The Beatles’ version (recorded in one take with John Lennon hoarse) became a UK #2 hit and a staple of their live shows. The song itself has roots in early R&B (the first version was by The Top Notes in 1961). Its title became synonymous with the Twist dance craze.
