Bicycle Race

'Bicycle Race' (1978) by Queen is a playful rock song inspired by Freddie Mercury watching the Tour de France ride past his recording studio. Mercury wrote the upbeat melody as a tongue-in-cheek ode to cycling ('I want to ride my bicycle!'), complete with an unusual bicycle bell solo. The lyrics throw in pop-culture references ('It's a nice day for a [Star Wars] bike ride'). The single’s promotional video (featuring dozens of nude women racing bikes at Wimbledon Stadium) caused some controversy at the time. Because it was released as a double A-side with 'Fat Bottomed Girls,' the two songs cheekily reference each other. 'Bicycle Race' became a chart hit and remains a charmingly eccentric Queen classic.
