Released in 1991, “The Show Must Go On” was Queen’s epic farewell to the world — a song about perseverance that took on added meaning as Freddie Mercury’s health declined. Written by Brian May (with Freddie in mind), the lyrics speak of putting on a brave face despite pain (“my makeup may be flaking, but my smile still stays on”). Despite his frailty, Mercury delivered one of his most powerful vocal performances, hitting soaring notes that gave listeners chills. The song was released just weeks before his death, and though it didn’t chart highly at first, it became hugely significant to fans. At the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in ’92, it was performed by Elton John and Queen, highlighting its powerful message: even in loss, the spirit of the show — and Freddie’s legacy — carries on.
