R.E.M.’s 1992 song “Man on the Moon” is a whimsical tribute to the late comedian Andy Kaufman and the power of belief. With a country-rock lilt, Michael Stipe name-checks Elvis, wrestling, and various pop culture curios, blurring the line between reality and hoax (“if you believe, they put a man on the moon”).
