R.E.M.
R.E.M. is an American alternative rock group from Athens, Georgia who created the hit Losing My Religion (1991). The song reached #4 on Billboard Hot 100 and became their biggest mainstream success. R.E.M. had distinctive sound with Michael Stipes cryptic lyrics and Peter Bucks jangly guitar style. The group sold over 85 million records worldwide and had 7 Top 10 albums on Billboard 200. Stipe was known for his enigmatic stage presence and refusal to give interviews in early career. The group disbanded in 2011 after 31 years of existence. Their influence is felt in the work of Radiohead, The Smiths and Pavement.
